A little backstory before I begin. This little idea began last year around the time of my birthday when I was feeling a little less than inspired. My fiance brought up the concept of taking things one step, or one day, at a time. She had me write a list of things that I would like to do. Small tasks that would make me happy while also giving me a challenge that I could accomplish. Things like, writing, excersizing, or doing something spontaneous.
That year for my birthday, she, along with my family, had snuck into my office over the weekend and redid the whole thing. She put up pictures, paintings, and plants. They rearranged my desk and just made the whole thing look generally awesome!
One of the little things that she added was a small, curved glass picture frame with two slots. In one was a print that read, "Just for today I WILL..." and in the other, a print that read, "Laugh and Play." Then for about a year, that same note stayed on my desk.
There were also several sheets with similar notes, all based on the list that I had made. Things like "Take things for what they are," "Drink out of a fancy glass, just for fun," or "Make someone else smile." But she didn't get around to cutting those sheets out (it's okay hun. I don't blame you :D )and so for that year, my instructions were to laugh and play.
I think it was good though. I think for that time, while I sat at my desk at work, I would occasionally look over and see that note. It would remind me that it's not worth taking things so seriously. That life is meant to be fun and that laughing and playing is really the most important thing any of us can accomplish.
Just recently, we moved into a new office, and I had another birthday, and for some reason I found those sheets with their little notes on them and I decided to cut them out. It was time to move on from laughing and playing to some other challenges. And last week I started switching them out. Over time I plan to chart my progress, making little steps and accomplishing important tasks. Last week was "Do something for myself" and this week I will "Create something."
These posts will start popping up here shortly under the "Just for Today" label. For now they will be weekly, but my goal is to make daily accomplishment posts.
Let me know if you have had any similar ideas or experiences.
