Just for Today I Will... Create Something - Week 2

On Monday this week I went to my weekly writing group. We switch out every week between Screenwriters and what has been dubbed as "Others" (basically all other kinds of writing besides screenwriting.) So this week was my turn, "Others". I think this meeting was appropriate because we kicked off a motivational project for the "Others" that the Screenwriters group began a few weeks back. So in the next two weeks I, along with anyone else who wants, will be writing a minimum of 500 words on anything we want. We came up with 3 suggestion topics (Travel/dream vacation, Favorite childhood toy, and Envision your life as a writer 5 years from now.)

So it's my plan to work on a sci-fi story about a favorite childhood toy. I thought it might be interesting to contrast adults complaining about how easy "kids these days" have it, with what a kid today might complain about when they're an adult. "We had to text with our thumbs. Darn this new fangled mind texting!" or some such. Either that, or write about some kind of hi-tech toy that could potentially do some serious damage, but that was commonplace to have at the time. Maybe something that gave access to certain crucial computer systems (just think about what some future toddler would do with a tool like that,) or some kind of doomsday device.

That was Monday. On Tuesday night I didn't do as well. My fiance and I planned to create something after dinner (she's an artist) but we ended up walking (which is also a good accomplishment for us so it wasn't a total loss.) Afterwards we were pretty tired so we didn't get around to working on anything. I had planned to write a few more pages of a story I just restarted. This was kind of a character backstory for a video game that I was helping develop. Since I started, the development has not gone too well and I haven't put much work into the piece. But, I had written about 5 chapters of it and outlined up to around chapter 13. Then the other night I decided that I will start from scratch and write the whole story until completion regardless of how crap it turns out. So we'll see how that goes.

Of course, the other thing I'm working on creating is this blog, and this whole "Just for Today" project. I have some other goals for this blog such as the Weekend Wordsmith posts, but for now I think kicking off one project is pretty good.
